What happens

Every stop is three lines and always the same three. Tibino spots something and says the colour on its own — "Oh! Red!" — then names the thing that has it, then asks whether you can say the colour. A moment later the same colour comes back on something unrelated: red apple, then red bucket; blue watering can, then blue bowl; yellow flower, then yellow banana. The walk goes from the farmyard through the vegetable garden, the barn, the kitchen and the pond edge, and finishes with a grey stone, a grey bucket and a goodbye. Pip comes along and says nothing.

Good for

A child who is learning colours and still mixes the colour up with the object. Because each colour appears twice on two things that have nothing else in common, the colour is the only thing left to learn — and the question always comes last, so there is a clear place to answer.

What a child picks up

Eleven colours — red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, brown, black, white and grey — and the twenty-two everyday farm and kitchen words they are shown on.
